YOUR DOME Tirol

A vision became reality. The transformation of the Schwaz Planetarium into an adventure dome with a convertible 360-degree dome has been completed. On 9 June, the YOUR DOME opened its doors!

In 2001, the planetarium in Schwaz in Tyrol was opened in a building newly constructed for this purpose. For more than 20 years, visitors could enjoy various shows on the topic of stars and space. These were brought to life with the help of precision optical equipment and a 360-degree video system in the dome.

From 2015, the idea matured to transform the planetarium and develop it further with new technical options. The vision of an experience dome with a convertible 360-degree dome, which would open up an even wider range of presentation options, was increasingly on the horizon. Visitors should be able to experience different worlds up close, explore them, discover other perspectives, immerse themselves in magical worlds of images & sound, and entertainment & knowledge transfer should be combined in the best possible way.

In 2020, the time had come: the vision became concrete planning. Thanks to the pandemic, there was suddenly enough time and space to think through the idea in detail and work it out. In the months that followed, a completely new operating concept was developed, business plans were written and technology partners were sought, and a strategy was developed for turning the planetarium into YOUR DOME Tirol. In the end, a precise project plan was on the table, which, in addition to the new operating concept with a wide variety of content, included a completely new dome screen with new projection technology and a redesign of the shop, café and outdoor facilities.
